Key Characters:

Growth Form: Herbs, vines, shrubs and trees. Includes some chlorophyll–deficient mycoheterotrophic plants and carnivorous plants.

Stems: Woody or rarely herbaceous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves mostly simple, a few compound. Alternate/spiral or rarely opposite or whorled. Margins toothed, with a single vein and opaque deciduous cap. Stipules rare.

Flowers: Corolla typically of 5 petals, often fused, sometimes weakly so; and radially symmetric. Stamens 5 or 10 (sometimes more) often borne free of the petals. Ovary superior with 3– or 5-locules.

Fruit: Capsules or berry; calyx often persistent on the fruit. Seeds with a usually thin seedcoat.
